Automakers Elevate the Driver Experience
Drivers today are looking for vehicles that are not just functional, but also reflect their personal style and preferences. They want an immersive, intelligent, and personalized experience that blends comfort, convenience, safety, and entertainment. As such, automakers are rethinking every touchpoint, from performance features to interior design, to create cars that aren’t just modes of transportation but customized digital ecosystems on wheels.
Here’s a look at the latest innovations and strategies automakers are using to elevate the driver experience.
In-Vehicle Connectivity
As people spend more time in their cars and become increasingly reliant on technology, features within the interior cabin such as device connectivity and entertainment are becoming more important to buyers. Many automakers are providing more personalized, convenient, and connected in-cabin experiences in order to meet buyer expectations. Existing entertainment options, such as radio and rear-seat screens, are being upgraded with gaming and streaming video options and high-end sound systems connected directly to Spotify and Apple Music.
Automakers recently showcased their latest advances for in-vehicle experiences at CES. Hyundai Mobis’ new holographic windshield display projects information ranging from driving speed to safety alerts across the entire windshield, and also provides some entertainment options for those who aren’t behind the wheel. Honda and Sony Honda Mobility also spotlighted in-cabin features that drivers will soon encounter in their new EV lineup. Sony Honda Mobility says “Afeela 1″ will include an interactive AI-powered voice agent to provide drivers with useful information as they drive and an infotainment system filled with a variety of entertainment apps.
Advanced Driver Assistance Systems
Safety has always been a priority for automakers, and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) are helping make roads safer while enhancing the overall driving experience. These systems use sensors, cameras, and radars to provide drivers with real-time assistance and improved safety features. Features like adaptive cruise control, automatic parking, and lane-keeping assist help take the stress out of daily commutes. These systems work together to help optimize a vehicle’s performance and make the driving experience smoother, while reducing driver errors to improve safety on the road.
General Motors is developing its next generation of vehicles with self-driving technology with NVIDIA AI chips. Advanced driver assistance systems need powerful AI chips to process vast amounts of data from cameras, radars and sensors at hyperfast speed to help the car react in real time, detecting stationary and moving objects, as well as lines on the road, road signs and road-side transponders to make active driving decisions. NVIDIA already partners with numerous automakers to supply chips for advanced driver assistance systems.
Autonomous Driving
Autonomous driving can transform the driving experience, allowing drivers to truly relax during long trips or while commuting in heavy traffic. Although fully autonomous vehicles are not yet widely available, automakers are partnering with technology companies to introduce self-driving vehicles for personal use. Waymo and Toyota recently announced a preliminary partnership to explore bringing robotaxi tech to personally-owned vehicles.
“The companies will explore how to leverage Waymo’s autonomous technology and Toyota’s vehicle expertise to enhance next-generation personally owned vehicles,” the two companies announced. Waymo and Toyota are not the only companies turning their focus to personally-owned autonomous vehicles. GM is also focusing on the development of autonomous systems for use in personal vehicles.
The driver experience is no longer just about getting from point A to point B, it’s about creating a comfortable, connected, and personalized journey. As technology continues to evolve, drivers can expect even more smart, seamless, and enjoyable driving experiences in the future.
